There is a pattern that researchers have documented in cognitive decline for decades. It begins quietly. A person starts doing less. They avoid challenges. They let others make decisions. They stop initiating. Their world becomes smaller, safer, more predictable — and over time, more fragile.

The Pattern Is Not Unique to the Elderly

In 1968, a researcher named John B. Calhoun built a perfect world for mice. Unlimited food. No predators. No disease. No competition. Everything was provided. He called it Universe 25.

Within a few generations, the mice stopped reproducing. They stopped caring for their young. They stopped engaging with one another in any meaningful way. They groomed themselves obsessively and retreated into isolated corners.

In the AI era, this removal is caused by technological efficiency — and accelerated by systems designed to make our lives as frictionless as possible. The mechanism is different. The outcome is beginning to look the same.

The Real Threat Is Not Replacement. It Is Withdrawal.

Most discussions about AI focus on replacement: which jobs will disappear, which skills will become obsolete, which industries will be disrupted. These are real concerns. But they miss something deeper.

The more fundamental threat is not that AI will replace what we do. It is that AI will replace what we need to do — and that, over time, we will lose the habit, the confidence, and finally the capacity to do it ourselves.

This is precisely what happens in cognitive decline. The person with early dementia does not lose their abilities overnight. They lose the occasions to use them. They lose the expectation that they should use them. They lose the feedback loop that tells them their participation matters. And then, gradually, the abilities themselves begin to fade.

The less we participate, the less we practice. The less we practice, the more capacity we lose. This is not a metaphor. It is a mechanism — one that operates identically in a person with early Alzheimer's and in a healthy thirty-year-old who has outsourced their thinking to an algorithm.

I spent five years studying cognitive decline. I read over a thousand academic papers. I developed a framework — SCVD (Systemic Cognitive Vital Dynamics) — that examines how living systems lose vitality, and what it actually takes to restore it.

What I found was not what I expected. Cognitive decline, at its core, is not primarily a story about plaques and tangles. It is a story about a system that has stopped receiving the signals it needs to stay active.

The brain requires engagement to remain functional. It requires challenge, contribution, relationship, and meaning. When these inputs are removed — by illness, by isolation, by over-care, or by convenience — the brain begins to withdraw. It is not destroying itself. It is doing exactly what any adaptive system does when its environment no longer demands participation: it conserves resources by reducing output.

The clinical term for one form of this is protective inhibition. The system judges that engagement is no longer worth the cost — and shuts down. In the AI era, we are creating the conditions for protective inhibition at a civilizational scale. Not through illness. Through comfort.

There is a word that appears throughout dementia research, and increasingly in discussions of AI: agency. Agency is the capacity to initiate, to choose, to act, and to influence outcomes.

It is not the same as intelligence. A highly intelligent person can lose agency — through depression, through dependence, through learned helplessness. A person with significant cognitive impairment can retain meaningful agency — through identity, contribution, and the preservation of small but real choices.

Agency is not a fixed trait. It is something that is continuously generated through engagement with the world — or continuously eroded through disengagement from it. This is what my work on cognitive decline taught me about the AI era: The greatest risk is not that AI will think better than us. It is that we will stop thinking — not because we are forced to, but because we no longer need to.

And a system that stops practicing the act of thinking, choosing, and engaging does not simply become less efficient. It begins, gradually, to lose the capacity itself. This is de-agency. And it is already happening.

In dementia care, we have learned that the most important intervention is not medication. It is the preservation of agency: the small, real, daily opportunities to choose, to contribute, to engage, and to matter. Not because engagement is pleasant. But because it is what keeps the system alive.

The same principle applies to the AI era. The question is not: how do we limit AI? The question is: how do we preserve the human habit of thinking, choosing, and acting — even when we no longer need to?

They are the people who have spent years watching what happens when participation fades — and fighting, inch by inch, to bring it back.
